Looking for a new Internet Service Provider (ISP) but don’t know which one to choose? Though difficult, it’s something we all must do every once and a while. This article will make your ISP shopping experience much easier.

Before signing up for an ISP, ask yourself these questions:

1. Do I need dial-up or broadband?
If you use the Internet for more than three hours a week, you should get broadband. Generally, the lowest speed broadband is the same price or only a little more than dial-up and significantly faster.

2. If I’m going to use broadband, how will I get it?

There are a variety of ways to get broadband Internet. The two most common and probably the best are through a phone line (DSL) or a cable line (cable). Less common ways to get broadband are through WISPs (wireless Internet Service Providers) or via your satellite dish if your satellite TV provider offers it. WISPs and satellite Internet are generally used in rural areas and are more expensive than DSL and cable broadband. Some areas now have fiber optic broadband, such as Verizon FiOS. Fiber optic Internet offers speeds much faster than typical broadband and is the best choice if available.

3. What ISPs are available in my area?

Gather a list of all available ISPs in your area.

4. What download speed do I need?

If you use your Internet infrequently, you can probably get away with a 256 kbit download speed. For online gaming (and I do not mean games like Internet Checkers), the faster connection you can get, the better. If you plan on setting up a home network and having more than one PC on the Internet at the same time, make sure you have at least a 1.5 mbit download speed. There is no need to get Internet faster than 1.5 mbit unless you share your Internet with others on a home network, download large files frequently, or play online games.

Note: Note that Internet speeds are measured in kilobits and file sizes are measured in kilobytes or megabits and megabytes if the number is 1000 kilobits or kilobytes or more. There is a huge different between bits and bytes! In fact, One kilobyte is equal to 8 kilobits! For example, a 3 mbit (3000 kbit) broadband connection will only yield a download speed of 384 kilobytes at the most.

5. What upload speed do I need?

You’re upload speed is less important than your download speed. You should only pay attention to how fast your upload speed is if you use bittorrent, upload files to the Internet frequently, play online games, or plan on running any kind of server, such as a game server or web server. Upload speeds are often much slower than download speeds and like with download speeds, the higher they are, the faster they will perform. Upload speeds are measured in kilobits and megabits respectively.

6. Do I want to run a game or web server?

If you want to run a server, you will need a dedicated IP and your ISP must allow servers. Read your ISP’s terms of service to make sure they allow customers to run servers.

7. Are there any limits to my Internet connection?

Make sure there aren’t any limits on your Internet you don’t know about, such as a monthly download limit.

8. What ISP is the best?

Search the Internet for reviews about your local ISPs. I personally recommend Dslreports.com for ISP reviews.

9. Cost and Features

Weigh the cost and features of each potential ISP. Which has the best value for the money? Does one ISP have a feature you really need? Can you get more speed for the same price with another ISP? Do I need to pay extra for a modem? Are there any termination fees?

10. Choose an ISP

After completing steps 1-9, it’s time to choose an ISP! Sign up, set up your new Internet connection, relax, and have fun on the web!

By: Daniel Foster

About the Author:

Announcing the winner of the best ISP award…the one that works for you and your family! Finding the best ISP is finding the one that works best for your internet experience and your needs. There is not an across the board best choice that will make every user satisfied. You need to choose an ISP that enables you and your family to use the internet in the ways and for the uses that you choose.

The best ISP will be one that offers software upgrades regularly and has been in business for a long time. The software upgrades will show you that they are constantly changing to give their users more features and speed. They will have a good track record with customers and their customer service associates will be available 24/7 with quick and efficient responses.

The number of email addresses available per account will help you decide which is the best ISP for you. If the number does not match or exceed the amount that you need for you and your family, then that ISP may not be the best choice for you and your family. Nothing is worse than your children fighting over an email address or reading each others emails.

If you have young children, then the best ISP choice for you may be one that offers the blocking of websites that are inappropriate for children. Some ISPs also offer special children’s offerings like games, cartoons, and movies. They also may offer links to homework help sites and other child appropriate sites.

The best ISP will be one that offers SPAM blocker and virus protection for your email and computer. This will protect your computer from any viruses that may be sent to you. SPAM blocker will help to save you time in reading your emails as it blocks many of those irritating emails that you do not want.

Unlimited internet usage is also the mark of one of the best ISPs. If you are on the computer several times daily, then this is the way that you want to go. Otherwise you could be paying extra money for any minutes over your specified time limit.

Price may be a factor in choosing the best ISP for you and your family, but keep in mind that you should not use price as the primary decision maker. Prices vary but so does service. The best ISP should be one that connects quickly and loads websites and information speedily. This may not happen with an ultra-cheap ISP. So choose the best ISP for you and your family to ensure that you receive the service that you need and deserve!

By: Mark Woodcock

About the Author:

The prospects for WiMAX technology as a viable business opportunity are often the subject of debate amidst numerous actual or perceived challenges. Applying these innovative insights can make these arguments and challenges disappear.

Unlike most people’s expectation of rural deployments, you might consider targeting SME’s in urban areas. There are several reasons for this:

o There is a growing demand in business for bandwidth capable of carrying symmetrical traffic, for voice, applications and uploading of larger files.

o There is a small but growing need for separated last mile services. Currently, however many wired service providers you have, they all use the incumbents’ last mile infrastructure based on its nearest telephone exchange location unless you have paid for an expensive dig from the next nearest exchange. This leads to single points of failure and the potential for business communications to be down for days, as can happen say with a cable duct fire somewhere in the spoke.

Your worst case environment would be a very high-density urban area with lots of interfering buildings, has multiple fibre networks, ADSL and SDSL in every exchange, hundreds of competing suppliers, a restrictive property planning regime with many ‘listed’ buildings, and no spare spectrum for FWA except the public 5.8GHz band.

To do this, because of the scale of competition from other service providers, your model needs to be disruptive. It has to offer things that businesses need (like QoS, toll-quality VoIP, high-quality video, symmetric bandwidth, higher capacities and network separation etc) at a lower cost.

This means stripping all unnecessary cost out of the model. You’ll benefit from a quality RF planning tool that gives you a major advantage over other operators – mapping exactly where you can provide service, how to set up the customer antenna, what bandwidth can be achieved etc, based on your base-stations. You need to know exactly how to tune base-stations to avoid blackspots – without needing an RF team.

Although Wi-Fi and WiMAX often get confused, they are very different from an operators perspective. Wi-Fi is plug and play with no control over the wireless interface. WiMAX is not, it behaves more like a carrier ATM network. Wi-Fi is built into laptops and handsets, whereas FWA WiMAX requires larger standalone receivers (yours should mount on customer rooftops for optimum utilty).

The benefit is that WiMAX is very spectrally efficient, at least 50% more so than 3G networks, so it has much higher data-carrying capabilities in limited spectrum. All Wi-Fi shares the same public spectrum – WiMAX can work across a wide range. Wi-Fi provides service over a range of 100m, your WiMAX needs to provide 10Mbps over a range of 1.3km from a base-station non-line-of sight.

WiMAX can create carrier-class networks, Wi-Fi cannot – not even with mesh networks. However, Wi-Fi with WiMAX backhaul gets some of the benefits of WiMAX as the backhaul such as VPN’s. A lot of WiMAX customer equipment will come with Wi-Fi built in.

Don’t wait for mobile (802.16e) WiMAX – your experience with vendors may be that they’re around fourteen months to two years behind on their promised delivery dates, and further delays could occur to key requirements. Don’t expect good enough 802.16e equipment to build a network with until late 2007 at the earliest, and no usable CPE until 2008 – as it’s mobile battery life is crucial and that will take time to get right.

There are big enough markets for FWA now. The most important thing is to grab the scarce resources first – spectrum etc – and make them yours. Except in those undeveloped countries without a mobile operator, mobile WiMAX will be very difficult to establish against incumbent operators with large installed bases because the areas covered are important to customers – which is not a consideration for FWA.

By: Michael Lemm

About the Author:

Dial up Internet service providers, or ISPs, are mostly organizations, companies or business that provides people who want access to the information superhighway the chance to do so. People who use dial up ISP are provided immediate access to the Internet through their own telephone lines. All you need is a computer, a telephone line and a modem that serves as the medium and channel between the phone line and the computer. Dial up ISPs provides users Internet connections that are around 56 kilobytes per second, or less.

Dial up ISPs also provide other services – they are not just limited to dial up access. They also provide Internet transit, domain name registration and domain name hosting. These dial up ISPs are mostly telephone companies, but not all of them are.

One of the disadvantages of relying on dial up ISPs is a slow connection. This sluggishness can be particularly annoying to people who are use to accessing the Internet through fast DSL, cable or broadband subscriptions. The average Internet speed through dial up ISP services is only 30 kilobytes per second, or 50 at most. But many people like dial up ISP because it is less expensive; if you don’t need speed, use dial up.

Finding the right kind of dial up ISP for you is not very difficult. However, the thing that you should remember is that, just like deciding on any other product or service, the best dial up ISP is the one that will provides quality service and gives you exactly what you need.

By: Richard Romando

About the Author:

Choosing an Internet Service Provider for first timers can be daunting to say the least. With various companies offering different deals and bargains, claiming that they have the best solution to your needs, it can be very easy to fall into the trap of sales market speeches and gimmicks.

Researching into ISP can also be fairly tricky as a lot of forums and information sites are full of jargon and computer terminology that will confuse most people even further. The best is to start looking at exactly what you need before searching for products.

Some types of ISP’s are specially created for home users that only want to send and receive their mail and occasionally surf the net. Others are for high traffic surfing, downloading and exchanging music, mp3’s and videos over the web. Work out how many hours you will probably be on the net for and for what purpose, before looking at the different options.

To name a few of the common ISP’s that are available, you can get Dial-up, Broadband, Cable and Satellite. Dial-up is one of the first types of ISP and although it is fairly cheap to use, it is also fairly slow. If you are generally just looking to download your mail in the evenings, this is probably your best choice. Satellite also isn’t exactly known for it’s high-speed performance but is probably the only option for highly rural area’s where technology can’t provide the others.

Broadband is becoming one of the more common choices as it faster and more efficient then dial-up, without the extra expense of adding a satellite. The only equipment needed for broadband Internet access is a network interface card or Ethernet connection. Today, these components are generally standard when buying your PC’s.

ADSL is one of the more common variations of Broadband for home users. It requires various components similar to dial-up, such as a landline, but works at a much higher speed. The pricing is generally between the competitive expenses of broadband and the cheaper option of dial-up. This is due to the user being able to choose how many gigabytes they want for the month. Most ADSL providers offer several e-mail accounts as well.

Companies generally do offer different deals for different types of usage. There are normally ones for business, catering for both small and large, as well as options for the homeowner. Each one offers a different amount of downloading options. Homeowners will more likely use less time on the net then business, but spend more time on weekends.

Check to make sure that the company you choose has a good support system and customer help line. The last situation you want to be in is having a deadline and you can’t access the information needed for it because the Internet is down and you are wasting time trying to get through either on the phone, or waiting for their service agent to come round. Check with friends, family and co-workers on their experiences with ISP companies. Dedication and reliability are the most important factors when looking for the right ISP Company for your needs.

By: Celeste Yates

About the Author:

In this modern days of always on Broadband and T1 Internet connections paying for a dial up connection is not worth it. There is no reason to pay much for Internet access when there are fast, reliable and cheap Internet service providers.

Even most of the free Internet Service providers simply provide you with a reliable, cheap Internet access account. These Free ISPs operate on Advertisement revenue and to maximize their revenue they will design their Services in such a way that they are able to display more number of Advertisements on your Screen.

ISP stands for internet Service provider. An Internet service provider (called an ISP for short) is a business that offers user’s access to the Internet and related services. These are the entry point for the Internet users to the vast network of Internet.

Many ISPs are Telephone Companies, or at least work closely with Telephone Companies. They provide dial-up or DSL access through “leased” lines. Generally, an ISP charges a monthly access fee from the Consumer.

If the ISP is the same Company as your Phone Company, then the charge will often times arrive with your Phone bill. The Consumer then has access to the Internet. Internet connection speed can generally be divided into two categories, one is Dial up and another one is Broadband. Dialup connections require the use of a Phone line, and usually have connections of 56 kb/s or less. This is slow speed but it could be enough low end users.

Broadband connections have a much larger series of options that don’t tie up the phone, and theoretically, is always on and available. General speeds vary from 64 Kb to 20 Mb per second or even more. So this is faster when compared to the first one.

Let’s review about the history of Internet. The history of Internet Service Providers is tied directly to the development of the Internet itself. While it’s obvious that ISPs wouldn’t exist without the Internet, the modern day Internet could very well not exist in its current form without ISPs to make the Internet as popular as it is now.

At first there were mainly a few large Giants, but as the Technology advanced, more and more smaller Companies began to rise up, usually by offering good deals on local service. By the 2000s, the battle over broadband began to appear. DSL, which was over phone lines, was an option for traditional ISPs. Cable companies jumped into the ISP game by offering the “new and improved” cable modem access. Pricing, Technology, and market share drove the Internet economy.

Smaller ISPs, however, did not have access to a cable system and DSL was too expensive. The only way to adjust and compete was to begin using wireless technology to provide Broadband access. These developments led to the advancement of the wireless Technology that is used today. Smaller ISPs offering low-cost internet have served traditional ISPs a major challenge.

Popularity of the Internet continued to rise, but the Companies providing the Services struggled. Many of the small ISPs fared better, since they operated on revenues and not over inflated stocks. So the ISP is like an ocean full of several facts.

By: John Gibb

About the Author:

Yes, there is such a thing as a free ISP or internet service provider. An internet service provider is a company that provides internet access, usually for a nominal fee. However, you might be surprised to find that there are Free ISP’s. If you are wondering if I am referring to the discs you receive in the mail that offer you free internet for 30 days, think again. The ISP’s I am talking about are not offering just a free trial.

So, how are these ISP’s able to offer free internet access? The answer to that will not come as a surprise. In fact, advertising is the funding source behind many free products. For instance, you can find many sites offering free MP3 downloads. However, just like the free ISP’s, these sites come with a great number of pop-up advertisements. In fact, these pop-ups can be so numerous on free internet connections offered by these ISP’s that it can become a real nuisance. It may even stall your computer and make it difficult and frustrating to surf the net.

Additionally, these free ISP’s may not offer internet, or free internet, in your area. If there is not a dialup number in your area, you may have to go without. These ISP’s may also limit the amount of time you can spend surfing the net. The amount of features that commercial ISP’s include may be lost when going with a free ISP. Most ISP’s that charge for their services are constantly coming up with new features. This is not the case with ISP’s that offer free internet services. Free ISP’s may also provide a poor quality connection with more interruptions that commercial ISP’s.

If you are looking for an ISP that is a step up from the free ISP’s, the answer might be right in front of you. You see, a lot of ISP’s that offer free internet services also have a premium package available for a low cost. In fact, offering free internet access can be a way for these ISP’s to attract customers. Once a customer sees that they enjoy using the ISP, they may decide to purchase unlimited access from them rather than their competitors.

Before accepting the terms and conditions of your ISP, always be sure you have read and understand every thing. When you are agreeing to free internet access you want to make especially sure that your ISP is truly offering the free internet access you think they are. You also want to make sure you know how much your internet time is limited to, if that is the case. You also want to look for any additional charges or long distance charges that may apply for your ISP.

By: Neil Shevlin

About the Author:

In the US, most of the people have one or more broadband access services to choose from – variations of DSL from multiple vendors and cable. That is if you’re in a metropolitan area. For more rural locations your choices are limited…..if you have any at all. Therein lies an opportunity for those willing to pursue it.

In the rural areas of the country, the selection is limited. Satellite is available to anyone (at high cost), but between dial up and T1 there are no options for many residents. Satellite suffers from latency, making it unsuitable for VoIP and some other real time Internet services. Some applications that should not be sensitive to latency (email, Web forms) will perform poorly or fail due to the increased packet time.

The traditional carriers (RBOC) and resellers face a cost issue in bringing broadband service to outlying areas. Without a concentration of users the per user cost at published rates causes either a poor or negative margin. The way cost accounting is done in larger corporations makes the business case worse for a large carrier. Cost allocations between departments for such things as floor space, personnel, and backend support end up as added costs rather than leverage opportunities. Traditional wired service will not reach outlying residents unless mandated by law, and the trend is against this happening in the near future.

So the opportunity is open for a business offering Internet broadband access service to outlying residents.

Therein lies a tremendous opportunity.

Now….just how do you go about taking advantage of this opportunity, filling a need, and building a wireless ISP network?

To assist you with working through the planning and execution of this effort here are some insights and resources you should consider:

* Business Continuity Planning – This isn’t the technical side of the business, the backup systems, redundant pathing, fail-over and restore, or alternate location stuff. Here you’re looking at subjects such as Legal Structure, Personnel Insurance, Asset Insurance, and Process and Procedure.

* Revenue and Profit – Covers where and how to create your income including installation, basic monthly service, custom access service, volume or corporate pricing, other services, business partnerships, usage based service, civic service, and tower leasing (or you could build and provide your own).

* Security Issues – There’s much to consider in this arena. Don’t overlook it.

* Bandwidth issues – The access line to your tower(s) is likely the critical factor to success. Whether it’s a T1 or a DS3 line. First off, it probably represents your single largest operational cost. Next, it determines the maximum quality of service you can provide.

Quotes you receive for bandwidth will probably be very different in terms of cost and performance guarantees, and should cover Performance Standards, Service Availability, Mean Time to Respond, Mean Time to Repair, Latency, Packet Loss, and Jitter. To help you search for the best match provider for your bandwidth requirements….I recommend utilizing the services of an unbiased independent broker by submitting a RFQ request to DS3-Bandwidth.com.

Here are some additional resources that may be of benefit to those developing a WISP….or thinking of it.

StartAWisp.com

WISP Centric

There’s also an excellent forum for discussion of ideas and issues between WISP owners and potential developers at DSLReports.com.

Final advice…..think strategically taking care to consider the business areas hilighted above. Do make use of an independent unbiased broker for the bandwidth decsion. Also, apply the resources shared here as well as any others discovered from your own research.

By: Michael Lemm

About the Author:

Back in the dotcom days, when dialup Internet connections were everywhere, free ISP offers were inescapable. The deal was that you viewed advertising while your computer was connected to the Internet, and in return you got your Internet connection for free.

The rise of more expensive and technically-complex broadband connections, however, has almost entirely killed this business model. Some free ISPs remain, but they are struggling. Only demographics that are undesirable to advertisers use dialup nowadays, making it almost impossible for them to sell their advertising inventory for as much as they would like.

However, this varies widely from country to country. In America, for example, free ISPs like Juno and NetZero are still holding on to a significant market share, thanks mainly to very large geographical distances between towns making broadband impractical in some places. AOL dialup, although not free and not even very good, is also surprisingly dominant in the American market.

Many European countries, on the other hand, are in the middle of broadband price wars, with some telecoms providers such as the UK’s TalkTalk offering free broadband service as part of their telephone strategy. This broadband can often be of dubious quality and requires the customer to sign up for phone service with the provider, but on the other hand it doesn’t feature any advertising or deliberate crippling of the services in the way that many dialup ISPs did.

However, in the future, we could be heading for a return to the free ISP, thanks to the rise of wireless networks. Sending wireless signals around is essentially free, apart form the initial cost of the equipment, and as wireless technology improves it will become cheaper and cheaper to cover whole towns and cities with access to wireless broadband. It is possible, in the future, that subscription-based ISPs could die entirely, to be replaced by local governments and authorities handling Internet access, in the same way as water or rubbish disposal.

By: John Gibb

About the Author:
